The Energy of the Future
In 1619 Johanes Keplero first used the word “energy” in its modern sense, but it was not until, the first half of the 1800s that the scientific concept was established: “the ability of a system to do work”.
Since then, fissil fuels such as oil and coal have contributed to the industrial and technological development we see today, becoming two of the most important energy resources that have marked world progress. The serious energy crises in the Western world during the 1970s and the reports on climate change at hte end of the 20th century led to drafting of the Kyoto protocol in 1997 which marked the decision of industralised countries to move towards using alternative fuels.
